SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The purpose of the Office of Special Education is to provide effective educational programs to students with disabilities, ages 3-21, so that they may receive free, appropriate, public education as provided for in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and state law.
The Special Education Department is responsible for identification and evaluation, eligibility, and individualized education plans eligible students and provides a variety of support services to students with disabilities and regular education students. The services offered through this department include:
- Behavioral intervention services
All students with disabilities in the Long County School System participate in a challenging educational program designed to meet their unique needs that results in increased academic performance and prepares them for employment and independent living.



Destruction of Records
In compliance with the Individual Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), The Georgia Records Act, and the Long County School System policy on destruction of data collected, maintained or used in the provision of a free and appropriate public education for the handicapped and/or exceptional children in the Long County Schools, the Special Education Department announces its intention to destroy special education records during the month of July 2011.
Records on students who were enrolled in a special education program in the Long County School System who were born prior to July 1, 1987 are no longer needed by the schools for educational purposes.
The confidential records may be needed by the student or parent for social security or other purposes. If you, as a former special education student or a parent of a former special education student, wish to obtain these records prior to destruction, you should contact the Special Education Department of the Long County School System. Positive identification will be required before the records can be released to the individual.

Child Find
LCSS participates in an ongoing statewide effort to identify, locate, and evaluate children birth through the age of 21 who have a physical, mental, communicative, and/or emotional disability to include students who attend state, private, or home-based schools.

Georgia Special Education Scholarship Information:
Important Dates to Remember for 2011-2012 Regarding S.B. 10
September 1, 2011 - Deadline for students to receive a private school scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. Students must be enrolled and attending one of the approved participating private schools by 9/1/11. Students not enrolled and attending a school by September 1, 2011 will not receive a scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. There are no exceptions to this annual enrollment deadline.
Early September 2011 - Reporting window for approved participating private schools to report scholarship student enrollment information to the Georgia Department of Education opens.
Early September 2011 - Deadline for approved participating private schools to report scholarship student enrollment information to the Georgia Department of Education. Schools that do not report by the deadline will not receive first quarter payments for their students until the second quarter payments are made in December.
Mid October, 2011 - First quarter scholarship checks for the 2011-2012 school year mailed to participating private schools that reported student information to the Georgia Department of Education by the September 17, 2011 deadline.
